Day 1: CAIRO
We will meet you at the Cairo International Airport to assist you through customs and immigration and escort you to your hotel for the night.
Day 2: SAQQARA AND GIZA AND DASHUR
In the morning, we will drive to Saqqara to visit the world’s oldest step pyramid and some of the tombs in the area before we continue Dahshur, the site of the first true pyramid in the ancient world. After lunch, we will tour the Pyramids of Giza, the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World. During the tour, you will have the chance to climb inside one of the pyramids, visit the Sphinx, and enjoy a short camel ride. We will return to the hotel in the late afternoon and can suggest a variety of evening entertainments, including local restaurants, shows, cultural activities, and seminars.
Day 3: CITADEL OF SALADIN AND KHAN EL KHALILI MARKET TO ASWAN:
In the morning, we will drive to the Citadel of Saladin and visit the 19th century mosque of Mohamed Ali before we take a bus to the Khan El Khalili market. We will eat lunch at a local restaurant and then visit the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. The museum has a remarkable collection of antiquities including the treasures of the child pharaoh, Tutankhamon. In the evening, we will board a sleeper train to Aswan.
Day 4: ASWAN
In the morning, we will disembark and visit the High Dam and the quarries of the Unfinished Obelisk. The latter provides a practical demonstration of the methods used by ancient craftsmen. Then we will end our tour with a visit to the exquisite Temple of Philae on the island of Agilkia. In the afternoon, we will take a felucca ride around Kitchener Island and Elephantine Island.
Day 5: KOM OMBO
We will spend our morning sailing to Kom Ombo to visit a unique Greco-Roman temple dedicated to two gods: Sobek, the crocodile god, and to Haroeris, the sun god. After our visit to the temple, we will sail to Edfu where we will get a chance to tour the best-preserved temple in Egypt, the Temple of the falcon god, Horus, built in 230 BC by Ptolemy III. After we return to the boat, we will sail to Luxor to spend the night.
Day 6: LUXOR AND KARNAK
We will spend the day visiting the Temple of Luxor and the Temples of Karnak, Egypt’s greatest compound of temples. Karnak, which is comprised of a vast conglomeration of ruined temples, chapels, pylons and other buildings, is part of the monumental city of Thebes. It is a vast open air museum and the largest ancient religious site in the world.
Day 7: VALLEY OF THE KINGS AND VALLEY OF THE QUEENS
We will spend our day on the West Bank of Luxor, exploring the tombs of the pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings and tombs of the princes and queens in the Valley of the Queens. We will also visit the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. You can choose to walk across the mountains of the West Bank, known in the ancient time as the home of Meret Segret or the Goddess of Silence. You will be walking across the same mountains that tomb robbers have covered for centuries in their quest to plunder tombs for their treasures. If you choose not to walk, you can enjoy a horseback ride in the West Bank of Luxor. After the tour, you will check into your hotel and can spend the afternoon at your leisure. You may choose to visit the Museum of Luxor or the Sound and Light Show at the Karnak Temples.
Day 8: FLIGHT TO DAHAB
We will catch a plane to Sharm Elsheikh, by the Red Sea, and then drive to Dahab to check into our hotel. During your stay in Dahab, you will get a rare chance to interact with the Bedouin people who make this area their home.
Day 9: ST. CATHERINE
We will take a midnight drive to St. Catherine to climb Mount Moses to watch the sun rise over this ancient and sacred landscape. After dawn, we will climb down to visit the Monastery of St. Catherine, which includes the Chapel of the Burning Bush, where Moses received the Ten Commandments. The monastery also boasts a library that is second only to the one in the Vatican. After lunch, we will drive back to Dahab.
Day 10: DAHAB
You can spend the day at your leisure. You may choose to interact with the local people and get to know more about the culture of the Bedouins or you may choose a car or camelback ride to explore the nearby canyons.
Day 11: DAHAB TO CARIO
After a morning at your leisure, we will drive to Sharm and catch a flight to Cairo.
Day 12: CAIRO
We will escort you to the airport and help you board your flight.
While in Dahab, we will stay in a lodge designed to have the lightest possible impact on the fragile ecosystem of the Bedouin people. Learn more about the Bedouin culture and how it survives in this harsh and beautiful land.
